When do we use 'is', 'are' and 'have'?

Dear Teachers,

I've got some questions to ask you:

1) Five years " is " much too long for me.

- Why don't we use : " Are" ?

2) The clerk and typist " has " been with this company for two years

- Why don't we use : " Have " ?

3) I'm going to take a " two-year English course ".

- Is this sentence right ?

4) I don't have any " sisters and brothers ".

- Is this sentence right ?

Please help me and thanks a lot in advance.

Number 3 and 4 are fine. Five years IS much too long means the period of 5 years IS too long. The clerk and typist (2 people) must be HAVE been ...
