HIE Tamara, Alan, Eda and others

In the bible it is said that we should not have equal rights with women.
Why do women advocate for equal rights between us and them?

thank you all in advance

As at present (not in biblical time Smile ) 'being woman' means a bit more than just performing traditional 'female functions' (housewives, etc) - but also social ones (in a wide sense). Many of which are of unisex nature (range of professions, etc).

Hi all,
I think that people shouldn't discriminate between men and women. All people are created equal and parity should be observed in everything(profession, rights...) Laughing Apart from this point of you I should admit that the only one sphere where just men should be involved in is medicine.

Hi Pamela,

You cannot be serious when you say:

Quote:
Apart from this point of view I should admit that the only one sphere where just men should be involved in is medicine.

Why on earth do you say that?

This sounds a bit like a quote from Animal Farm:

All animals are equal but some are more equal than others.

No, Alan, that's my personal opinion. I've seen many doctors men and women. To tell the truth, men were always more competent. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't think that in the Uk and in every part of the world it's the same situation. I don't like to generalize.

You need to show us in the Bible where it says women should not have equal rights. As Abraham Lincoln is claimed to have said, any fool with a cause can find a passage in scripture to support himself. (He also said, "A woman is the only thing I am afraid of that I know will not hurt me." Very Happy) You could be misinterpreting biblical passages in light of your own local culture. This can be a problem, especially for Christians growing up in the midst of Muslim culture or extreme secularism.

Remember that it is a woman, not a man, who God said in Genesis will crush the head of the serprent. The Bible is full of important women who had as much power as men. Furthermore, in Catholic tradition, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Catherine of Siena, and St. Therese of Lisieux have been given the title of "Doctor of the Church" for their intellectual contributions to the faith. They join the ranks of several men in this.

Think about it: Would you be safer with a submissive wife who is not as strong or competent as a man, or would you be safer with a wife who is intelligent, strong and can protect you and take care of your business and personal matters when you are sick or old? My dad had the latter type of wife, and I'm telling you, it's much better than having the former!

By the way, men should not beat their wives, either.

But what about adat? I'm not very familiar with the Muslim's family and religious theoretical basis (such as Koran), but as I heard, it actually claims 'equality', even though there is rather a few evidence of 'equal rights' for women in practice.

In the Bible it says if a man sees a woman among the captives and would like her for a wife, then he shalls bring her home and "go in unto her." Later, if he decides that he doesn't like her anymore, he can "let her go."

But which part of the Bible are we talking about? Everything changes from the Old to the New Testament. There are places in the Old Testament, for example, that call for the stoning to death of adulteresses (as is still done in parts of the Muslim world today), but in the New Testament this is clearly forbidden.

And does that passage describe a specific circumstance, or is it given as a general principle for all time?

Exactly. The Old Testament also states: 'An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth'.

Now Jesus changed that in the New Testament, He said 'Love your enemies' and 'A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you'.

Which some people misinterpret to mean that one should not defend oneself against attack or should not punish criminals. Of course it doesn't mean that.

The difficult part is knowing the amount of violence that can be justified (if at all) as an act of self-defence.

Hi...

I am in general really open minded and believe in equal rights and that people should do want they want to without being judged by others for their choices. Therefore I want to share the following with you:

I like this band called Karmina and they have a video for the song "The Kiss" where real people share their forbidden love story. Just heard that they are now looking for more people to share their forbidden love story on their blog, and will this way also try to attract attention to the prop 8 repeal in California. There are already some incredible love stories there. They will also choose select love stories for a video interview and, for an even more select few, a media appearance with Karmina.

If you are interested you can see more on www.iwishtheworldcouldhear.com

I think it great to see a band getting involved in this issue and it is also a great song and video.
