It means We are about to go downtown/we are going to the city centre/we are heading for the city centre.

Hi, I normally hear people saying "We are trying to make it to the town" is this sentence correct? why use "for the town" and not "to the town" ?. thanks

Hi flower,

If you say: We are making for the town, this simply means that we are going in a direction towards the town - that is as it were our destination.

If you say: We are trying to make it to the town, this suggests you have problems because there are obstacles in the way - there could be a flood /an earthquake/ an uprising or whatever that makes it difficult to get there. You would say: The climbers eventually made it to the top of Mount Everest at their third attempt.
