I think you need to take more advantage of the dictionary, Tom. Here are the entries for the first 4 dictionaries I checked at ONE LOOK DICTIONARY SEARCH:

Plebeian: the unwashed masses.

Of or associated with the great masses of people (Example: "The unwashed masses")

IGNORANT, PLEBEIAN <the unwashed masses>

PHRASES: the (great) unwashed derogatory the multitude of ordinary people.
