True is the adjective or describing word and truth is the noun or substantive.

So if you describe something exactly as you saw it -

You tell the truth

or

You tell a true story

Why it cannot be "the information" instead or as well as "the truth"?

As far as I`m concern the main idea of the sentence: children must be honest, as well as information can be false or true both

True is like a fact. i.e. That is true.
Truthful is what a person "is". i.e he is truthful.

Everyone learns differently - some excellent teachers focus on the exact grammar names and functions, when I teach I prefer to gvie examples. When I was a kid I never got grammar but sure enough I spoke pretty much correctly. Focus on correct usage by reading and listening as much as possible. Of course knowing the grammar makes everything easier.
