Essay Topic

Technology promises to make our lives easier, freeing up time for leisure pursuits. But the rapid pace of technological innovation and the split second processing capabilties of computers that can work virtually nonstop have made all of us feel rushed. We have adopted the relentless pace of the very machines that we supposed to simplify our lives, with the result that , whether at work or play, people do not feel like their lives have changed for the better. Do changes that make our lives easier not necessarily make them better ? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your readings, studies, experience, and observations.

TOEFL ESSAY SAMPLE

Nowadays, technology plays an essential role in our modern life. A simple example of technology we can see is internet, many people can't live without internet just a day. If you want t osearch information, you can use google tool, if you want to chat with your friends, your relatives, etc. you have yahoo messenger, etc. Technology can be applied in transportation. Without transportation, countries can't develop. But as the result, people don't want to change their life. So do changes make life better or easier ? Should people change their normal life ?

I think that first of all, changes give you many new opportunities. For example, few years ago, I like to live in small town, but then I decided to move to a big city. At first, I felt hard to be familiar with this new environment but day by day, I recognized that big city gave me chance to meet many people, widen my relationships, work in a big company, and have good salary, etc. I think that first you can see changing is very hard and you have to do many things that you haven't done before, but that's a way you can improve yourselves.

Second, changes maybe give you a new life, open a new world for you to discover. Many people think that they live in convenient world with updated technology so they don't need anything else, they don't need changes. But I think that it's wrong opinion because technology has been developed by humans, it can't be developed itself, if everybody just know how to use technology, satisfy with what they havethi world will never be better. Technology is just a tool for us to make life easier but if you just make some changes to your normal life, it will be better. My brother is an example. Just last year, he still worked all day with his computer because he was a computering engineer, he came home late at night after a tired working day and slept. But now, he changed. He has a good schedule of workign and relaxing time. He works better because he doesn't feel tired of working day by day without rest.. He has time to travel wherever he wants, meets many new friends, and just two weeks ago, a company invited him to be a manager, with very high salary. You see, just small changes can give you a new aspect of life.

Last but not least, I think that changes can't give you all better things, sometimes, it gives you many problems and abrupt things. For example, your relatives and your friends maybe can't adapt to your sudden changes and react in bad way, your life becomes messy, etc. But I think that every thing has two aspects : positive and negative ones. We just need to believe in our decision and everything will be fine. Changes are just a way for us to improve our recognition to our life, our world; we can be more balancing when facing with abrupt problems.

PS: can you score from 0 to 6 for me, I just want to know where I am to try more. Thank you so much.

Hi,

I think that first of all, changes give you many new opportunities. For example, A few years ago, I like to live/I LIKED LIVING in small town, but then I decided to move to a big city. At first, I felt IT hard to beCOME familiar with this new environment but day by day, I recognized that THE big city gave me THE chance to meet many people, widen my relationships, work in a big company, and have A good salary, etc. I think that first you can see changing is very hard and you have to do many things that you haven't done before, but that's a way you can improve yourselves.

But I think that it's A wrong opinion because technology has been developed by humans, it can't be developed BY itself, if everybody just knowS how to use technology, satisfy/SATISFIED with what they have IN thiS world will never be better. Technology is just a tool for us to make life easier but if you just make some changes to your normal life, it will be better. My brother is an example. Just last year, he still worked all day with his computer because he was a computering/COMPUTER engineer, he came home late at night after a tired working day and slept. But now, he HAS changed. He has a good schedule of workign/WORKING and relaxing time. He works better because he doesn't feel tired of working day by day without rest.. He has time to travel wherever he wants, meets many new friends, and just two weeks ago, a company invited him to be a manager, with A very high salary. You see, just small changes can give you a new aspect of life.

Last but not least, I think that changes can't give you all better things, sometimes, it gives you many problems and abrupt/SUDDEN things/CHANGES. For example, your relatives and your friends maybe can't adapt to your sudden changes and react in bad way, your life becomes messy, etc. But I think that everything has two aspects : positive and negative ones. We just need to believe in our decision and everything will be fine. Changes are just a way for us to improve our recognition to/OF our life, our world; we can be more balancing/BALANCED when facing/FACED with abrupt/UNEXPECTED problems.

And how's mine:

Technology plays an important role in our lives. The internet lets us communicate at huge distances just in the moment. Owing to cars our journeys have become faster and more comfortable. On the other hand, mobile phones facilitate giving help in emergency situations. Convenience of using technology limits people in changing their lives. Is it true that life a hundred years earlier was better? Should people change their lives?

I do not know what my life would be like without mobile phone, computer and car but I know what makes me angry in all these things. The mobile phone makes me feel like on a dog-lead and I may not simply switch it of because everyone will worry about me. The internet except for a few advantages is only time-grubber. Cars are polluting the atmosphere cause obesity. It sounds little like a complaint, but all those bad features are the cost of comfort and conveniences, the cost of changes.

Humanity is pitted against the biggest problem in the history. By using things that are redundant, because there are many substitutes on the market. By using deodorants, gas-guzzling cars and plastic packages people have led to global warming. Al Gore in his film, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ showed the consequences of our lifestyle and said what people should change in their behaviors to prevent themselves and next generations against environment changes.

People do not like changes, but they effectuate them. Such situation was in communistic Eastern Europe. At the beginning of communism people even like it but in 60’s people’s attitude began changing and led to strikes in Poland in 1970 and in 1980’s. After about 40 years of communism, in 1989 in all Eastern Europe changes of systems have started and everyone knows that it was upturn.

Do changes that make our lives easier not necessarily make them better? Yes and no, because it depends on what sort of changes it is. The point is not to change things which made our lives better and find things that are still not changed or that were changed to worse.
