Hi NS,

Let me get this straight: you have lent $600 to a total stranger and now you are asking why this total stranger wants to study in America and also when this total stranger is going to let you have this money back. Come on! Is this some kind of hoax cooked up by the pair of you? Or am I just being cynical?

Hello all,‎
Let me ask Jenifer a query. Jenifer, how can you repay that money in 2 months?‎

I have the same conditions as you. I’m studying English and very eager to study abroad. ‎But I don’t have enough money. Of course, in my country, taking out a loan is a piece of ‎cake. The banks are very eager to loan to everyone. ((Of course everyone has to offer his ‎or her house as a guarantee)). I myself won’t take one out because I’m not sure that I can ‎keep up its installments on time. ‎

Once again I ask you the question, how can you pay it back?‎
Best,‎

The very right moment to start becoming interested in, NS. )
But a bit strange place to... publish the question, I’d say.

Yeah, I asked the same question at the previous page, but wasn’t given an answer…
Sad

This thread is hot, anyway.

No. I don't know her but after she came forward to look for me in my school, i realised that she is from the same campus as me but we are both from different schools. So, that's why i decided to lend her my $600.

She is asking for singapore dollars: $50,000 which is equal to USD$ 32,530.90 and equal to Euro: 25,200.07

Hi Jennifer

Did you meet with FootHill admissions staff when they were in Singapore (in September or October 2006)? What did they advise? What is your current educational level? Foothill appears to be a community college, which generally means you can only get an associate's degree there (roughly the equivalent of first two years of a bachelor's degree). You mentioned wanting to get a PhD. Getting a PhD would require years (more than just 2 years) of additional study AFTER Foothill.

If you are already attending a university in Singapore, why try to attend a community college in the US? In terms of educational level, it seems to me that would be taking a step backwards.

@yankee,

I have withdrawn from my course which i have no interest in since last year April. I am not a university student yet. I withdrew from the course and this means that i also do not have a diploma. Hoping to study my dream course in USA and gaining admission into UC Berkeley after the 2 years in foothill college where i can accumulate some college credits.

I do not want my parents to worry about me and i never tell them that i have withdrawn from my boring course. So this is why i cannot borrow money from the bank because it required my parents to be gurantors. I want to do something which i have been hoping to do since young. To study computer science and neurosurgery is my childhood dream.

The reason why i cannot work now and study later is because by the time i saved enough for the tuition fees now, the fees will increase again and i will forever cannot get a chance to study at all. Without a diploma qualification, my pay will be very low: SGD$600 per month only... Crying or Very sad

I have no friends who are that rich enough to help me. All of them are earning SGD$1000 per month only and they have their own families to feed.

I cannot ask from my school because i am not qualified for their scholarship.

I am hoping that someone from the UK and US can help me. I promised to return the money during my summer vacation in USA. I will be able to get help from the people there by the time i reached USA.

I am not a cheater or swindler and i am not in cahoot with anyone to cheat you. I do not like to tell lies and i do not like to break my promise. I am not the type whom you guys accused me of. Smile

Jennifer,

First of all, i thought Singapore was one of the world-leading countries in high-tech and, moreover, they have pretty strong engineering schools (NYU, NUS). I don't know how it is right now, but it was not difficult to get financial aid there some 4 years ago...

Still, if you want to go to USA and don't have a penny it is rather strange. Leaving aside the possibility that this thread is fun, I can suggest that you apply to some other school that offers some kind of financial aid for international students or, at least, covers their tuition. Once you are there, you can do your best to strengthen your positions and transfer to any college you want.
your current plans, however, are very vague.

did you consider other schools?

My dream course: computer science in foothill college. I have browsed through other school's website but it does not suit me. Crying or Very sad

Singapore will only aid students financially if they have strong academic background. I am only an average person. Crying or Very sad

Rolling Eyes Dear Jennifer,
There are scholarships about this. If you are good in computer sciences, you can take scholarships. And how do you expect to return the money??? Maybe you are a computer genius??
Sorry, but this doesn't sounds serious??

Hi Jennifer

The majority of summer jobs avaiable for students in the US are not full-time jobs, so if you wanted to work full-time in the summer, you'd probably have to find more than one job.The summer jobs available for college students are frequently compensated at the minimum wage, which is currently $5.15 an hour. That means that many/most students cannot realistically expect to earn more than $2000 in a summer. There is no way you can realistically expect a couple of summer jobs to be enough to pay back a private loan of $35,000 within two years. You need to get an educational loan from a bank and/or continue to look for scholarships. Banks require a cosigner and the cosigner must be someone who can demonstrate the ability to pay off your debts if you default on (can't manage the payments for) the loan. Cosigners for student loans are typically the student's parents. It is not realistic to expect a total stranger to take on such a huge responsibility.

You should also be willing to attend a college/university that isn't your "first choice". This is what countless US college students have to do. My niece was valedictorian of her high school class but was unable to get into her top three university choices.

Was it just one course you dropped out of? Are you attending any courses at all the moment? Did your parents pay for the course(s) you dropped out of? Do you realize that dropping out of courses will probably make it even harder to get into a college or university and also make it harder to get financial assistance?

You ought to be making the most of the courses you're able to take in Singapore. That means working hard to get the best grades possible and sticking with your studies even if some courses seem "boring" to you.

You still haven't answered this question: Did you meet with the Foothill staff when they were in Singapore last fall?

Sorry, but everything that you've written so far leads me to believe that you're either a scammer or that you're completely out of touch with reality.

I will not be logging into this forum for quite sometime because i have lots of projects to do. As for Jennifer's loan, i am sorry to say that $600 is all i can afford to help. You can't expect me to lend her $50,000 to study abroad. $50,000 sing dollars is considered a lot of money to majority of the singaporeans. I am not a full time worker yet and most of my tuition fees was being covered by my parents. Embarassed

-->~Jennifer, wish you good luck. And remember about my $600 loan.~<-- Smile
