TOEFL essay sample: A company has announced that it wishes to build a large... #1 (permalink) Thu Jan 25, 2007 20:10 pm   TOEFL essay sample: A company has announced that it wishes to build a large...

A company has announced that it wishes to build a large factory near your community. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this new influence on your community. Do you support or oppose the factory? Explain your position.

It is said that a company plans to construct a large factory near my community. This event will inevitably bring about both crucial advantages and disadvantages.

On one hand, it is impossible to deny the benefits which the plan will bring about. If a factory is built here, the unemployment rate will surely decline thanks to related jobs that the construction will supply. Also, people’s living standard will be substantially improved as a result of these incomes. Besides, along with this factory, other infrastructure and facilities such as roads, healthcare centers, restaurants, hotels and so on will be erected. So local people will be provided with much more products and services. Taxation of the factory’s operation will also contribute a large part to the local authorities’ budget, improving their operating efficiency. In short, after being finished, the factory will certainly generate many economic benefits for the community.

On the other hand, it should be admitted that this plan will cause a number of serious problems. The factory will emphatically harms the local environment. It is common knowledge that the factory will emit a lot of smogs and dump numerous wastes everyday. Hence, the pollutants will seriously impact local people’s health. Dusts caused by trucks running all day make people impossible to enjoy any fresh air. Noises caused by the machinery of the factory also make them easy to acquire mental problems such as depression and stress. What are our living standard and healthcare services boosted for while we still have to suffer from lethal diseases each day ? Undoubtedly, those consequences are extremely difficult to solve and long-lasting. It may take as much as several decades to make the environment as pure as it was before. In addition, with the construction of the factory, tens of thousands of people from other places will arrive here, seeking their fortune. As a result, the community, and the youngsters in particular, will be negatively affected by bad lifestyles and social evils accompanying these people. Perhaps the degrading of the next generations in return for economic benefits will be a too high price. Generally, the plan, if implemented, will definitely lead to many negative influences in terms of both environment and society as well. Therefore, I critically object to the construction of this factory.

All in all, the threats of this plan over the community clearly outweigh its economic opportunities. Instead of residential areas, factories of this kind should be built in industrial parks or economic zones.

A good piece of writing.
