Hi! I really think there's just an "f" missing, it should read "laugh off" which means to use humour to deal with a problematic situation

Lucien is right -- it should read 'laugh off'.

While we're on the topic, I'd like to point out that the death of one's mother is not something that people typically "laugh off" (which is why it's incorrect in the test sentence).

Here are some definitions for "laugh off":

to minimize by treating as amusingly or absurdly trivial

From Dictionary.com:
to dismiss as ridiculously or laughably trivial
