Hi,

You need 'realised' here because the speaker had forgotten that it was a Sunday and now remembers and now understands.

dear Alan,

So, why the "understood" is not correct also?

Thank you.

Hi Svitlana,

If you used 'understood' in that sentence, it would mean that you had worked out the meaning of something and that wouldn't make sense in this sentence. You need to use 'realised' indicating that you now know (it is clear to you) what day it is.

Look at these two sentences:

1 I understood every word that he said = every word was known to me

2 I realised that she was telling me the truth = it became clear to me that she was telling the truth.

Hope this helps.

Alan

Hi Klyn,

It's the same word - just a variation of the spelling.
