GRE® Math: Function problem

Dear Friends,

I am preparing for the GRE. I have to solve all these function problems and have no clue. I have provided a sample question and I will appreciate if someone can solve it for me and explain the rationale involved. My math education did not cover functions.

For all numbers n, n*= 32-n. Which is greater? (n*)* or n.

Well:

n* + n = 32

So we'd have to solve for two variables... the exponential variable (*) and n.

Some real math wizard might be able to do this, but I'm calling it an ambiguous situation -- I need one of these variables, either * or n, in order to proceed.

I think that solution is "(n*)* = n "

n*=32-n
therefore, (n*)* = 32 - (n*) = 32 - {32 - n} = n

therefore, (n*)* = n

are you OK?
