TOEFL essay sample: Many people visit museums when they travel to new places #1 (permalink) Wed Mar 28, 2007 5:10 am   TOEFL essay sample: Many people visit museums when they travel to new places

Many people visit museums when they travel to new places. Why do you think people visit museums? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

While traveling to a new place, a number of people often visit museums there. Perhaps some suppose it is boring, however, as for me, I consider it wholly reasonable.

Firstly, museums provide visitors with general knowledge about the locality. When arriving in a strange place, the most essential thing to visitors is to learn about local residents’ customs, traditions and so on. Thus, they could grasp a general understanding of the local culture. Furthermore, thanks to this understanding, they could avoid unnecessary nuisances such as cultural shocks, embarrassment among others. Where else could they obtain that comprehensive knowledge if not local museums ? Therefore, needless to say how important to newly arrived visitors museums are.

Secondly, visiting museums is the fastest and most convenient way to obtain the understanding of the area. As traveling on a tour, visitors have no time to wander around the destination. Hence, taking a few visits to museums is the best way they can do. Some may argue that there are still many ways to learn something about the locality such as reading guiding books, watching TV and so on. Nonetheless, they can’t bring about such an exhaustive and real view of the region as the museums can. In short, local museums are the best means for visitors to gain knowledge about the new place.

Finally, the museums are also places of interest of an area. Through museums people could find many everything in every field which they pay attention to. If art is your field of interest, you should visit the fine art museum. If history is your hobby, the historical museum is the place where you could listen to interesting introductions and enjoy ancient artifacts. Generally, museum could bring about the unforgettable amusement for their visitors.

All in all, the role of museums in tourism sector is undeniable. Clearly, that’s the reason why the number of their visitors is unabated over time.
