TOEFL Essay: Change in the hometown #1 (permalink) Sat Apr 14, 2007 22:06 pm   TOEFL Essay: Change in the hometown

Hello!
Question:
If you could change one important thing about your hometown, what would you change? Use reasons and specific examples to support you opinion.
Answer:
If it had been possible to change one important thing in my hometown I would have changed our road system. I guess that such modification will be very useful and decreasing of traffic jams, increasing of roads’ quality and creation of special bicycle paths will be the components of such reform.

Traffic jams are the problem of most big cities and my city isn’t exclusion. If I wanted to go anywhere early in the morning or close to the end of working day it would be out of the question because of traffic jams. When cars are staying in jam-ups, they produce a huge amount of contamination without any benefit. I believe that traffic jams don’t emerge only because of narrow streets, but also because of the bad traffic organization.

Since I’m a bicycle rider I want to see special roads to go in for my avocation. It’s not very comfortably to ride either on the pavement or on the carriageway. The former isn’t too safe for pedestrians and the latter isn’t safe for the bicycle riders. The European countries have a big experience in such roads developing and building and I suppose it would be a good solution to adopt it.

The last component of the traffic system reform would be the enhancement of roads’ quality. The bad roads have affected harmfully on the reputation of my city. Some foreigners, when they were in our city, thought that they were on the tanks’ testing area. Also the damages of the routes’ surface hurt the chassis of the cars and it’s necessary to make expensive repairs very often.

My city is an awesome place with beautiful nature and people but with awful road system. I think that after its improvement my city will develop more quickly and be more comfortable location to live in.
