Hi,

Could you please tell me if the 'old cheese' in the following context has a sense of 'old important man' or just 'old guy'?

Next to him is Dave Dyer the druggist--you met him this afternoon--mighty good duck-shot. The tall husk beyond him is Jack Elder--Jackson Elder--owns the planing-mill, and the Minniemashie House, and quite a share in the Farmers' National Bank. Hi Haihao,

'Old cheese' is a new one on me but I agree that it probably indicates something along the lines of 'old chap/fellow'.
