Clich?s are sayings or phrases that are frequently used, like 'better late than never', 'as easy as pie', 'put two and two together' or 'like the pot calling the kettle black'.

Conchita explained things well.. to answer your question "where to use" ..

often authors use the word cliche when they are going to say a common sentence... they would write " i know it sounds cliche but....."

My advice is don't use a cliche. Instead of using it, think of something original.
