Would it be better to say Tom's brothers are living in New York. or
Tom's brothers live in New York. I think Tom's brothers live in New York is correct because it is a fact, but I was told are living is just as good.

Hi,

Just to add to what Pamela has said - they are both acceptable but the idea of 'they are living' makes that piece of information more immediate and actual almost suggesting that they are living there now and not anywhere else.

If I may just point out, the use of the present continuous gives the impression of a temporary situation, whereas the present simple suggests a permanent circumstance.

1st:
A. Where are Tom's brothers?
B. They are living in New York. (A present situation immediate and actual almost without emphasis on any part?)

2nd:
A. I'm going to call on Tom's brothers there when I get to L.A.
B. Hey, they live in New York, boy! (A fact somewhat with an emphasis on New York?)

Could you please clarify it for me?
