Greetings Alan,
Yes, my words certainly were a compliment and I was very pleased to have met you finally in real life. As you confirm having a sense of humour is a very important quality.
It makes life so much more enjoyable and everything runs much more smoothly. And ... as you say what?s the point of getting up in the morning, if you can?t begin with some humour. I sometimes get into trouble with my students because of my humour. I forget that they don?t think like the British who can laugh at themselves and find humour very important. Just as important as a good cup of tea. PG Tips, naturally. Even the Germans like the British humour. Take Monty Python for example of our lovely TV advertisements like the PG Tips Tea Bags Ad. (with the monkeys), the Electricity Board (with the animals) or the British Telecom Ad. with the Jewish mother etc. etc. I haven?t see British adverts for along time now and you will realise that those examples are pretty old. There is a time and place for humour of course, just as there is time to be serious and thoughtful. Our Shakespeare wrote about that. Which play was it now?
There are of course some people who would rather have a long face because they just get more kicks or enjoyment out of being miserable. With humour, we also have to be careful because some people are over sensitive and can take things too personally or read humour and jokes the wrong way. Getting upset and over-reacting not realizing that the joke was for everybody and not directed at them. It usually comes from a lack of self-esteem or an inferiority complex. I do know the feeling, I wasn?t always so confident as I am today.
In Germany, people generally tend to be rather serious and are not given to spontanious spurts of humour. That is not their fault as such because I think recent history has a lot to do with it. The poor Germans have really had to take some stick because of two world wars. Which means they have to carry a big fat karma because of what their forefathers did. I see today that the younger generation have a responsibility to change the way the world thinks about their country. Whatever, but they are good people just the same as any nation when you get to know them.
As for the Moussaka, yes, jolly good. It reminds of my mothers Shephards Pie. That?s probably why I like it. The Greeks have got some good menus. My favourite meals are Indian, Italian, Greek and Scots (game & sweets). I also like the Egyptian (Arab?) and some of the Turkish ideas.
OK Alan, I?ll have to talk some more later. I have to dash now. Also give my best wishes to your talented wife Sylvia. Speak soon, Bruce. _________________ Free English Tests |

Nina, I feel I should just point out that superstition has nothing to do with religion, in my opinion. |
Conchita! You have to excuse me! I apologyze for the clumsy slip. I did not in anyway mean to say that Christians are superstitious. I was only referring to the supertition being cultivated in the Christian society, once upon a time.

You just took the words out of my mouth

Yes, I must. Thank you! God bless! |

Hi Nina Zara and all,
Man, I have been busy the last few weeks. Now, I shall try and catch up with everybody.
Now back to numbers - lucky and unlucky. You will find that numbers or lucky numbers particularly are a classification of a frequency or wavelength. Which again is nothing more than the vibration at which our thoughts resonate. Everybody will probably be able to confirm that certain numbers repeat themselves very often in their own lives, with and without their influence.
At the end of the day, it?s what you "imprint" on your subconscious mind which attracts to you all the people and events in your life. I think your story about the number '4' , Nina Zara, is some proof of that.
The subconscious mind really is a "fantastic magnet" which attracts to you everything you think and desire. The speed it comes to you depends on the intensity of your emotion and feelings about what you are thinking about. The subconscious mind is also "neutral" to what it attracts. So, we all have to be careful about what we wish for and desire. I know this for a fact, and could tell you some amazing stories in my own life which prove this to be true.
Some of the stories are based on absolute concentration on something I really wanted to receive or achieve. Other stories are based on results which came to me, which, after long reflection - were exactly what I had quietly been wishing and thinking about over a long period of time.
There are quite a few books about the power of the subconscious mind on the market. All based upon real life experiences of the author. They all explain the workings of the subconscious mind and how you can be very aware, and control your wishes and their results.
If you are interested, I would definitely recommend the following :
Author .................. Titel .............................................
Joseph J. Murphy - Power of the Subconscious Mind Maxwell Maltz - Psychocybernetics Neal Donald Walsch - Conversations with God (Book 1,2,& 3 ) Earl Nightingale - The Strangest Secret Dr.Wayne W. Dyer - You see it when you believe it. Napoleon Hill - Think & Grow Rich Napoleon Hill - The 17 Principles of Personal Achievement
... there are of course many more valuable books from authors who can vouch for the magnetic effects in their real life experiences.
In fact, everybody can confirm the the magnet attraction of the subconscious mind in their own life. It only takes a little reflection on a particular event which we often call 'good luck' or a 'coincidence'.
Thoughts are indeed real and have no barrier. If you think about a person long and intensive enough, however far away, that person will receive your thoughts and very likely make contact with you as a result. We have all experienced this.
I?ve shortened this 'Post' because I tend to "get on a roll" and write a bit too much.
I would be interested to know what numbers are considered lucky or unlucky in other countries, like Arabian, Asian, Russian and South American areas and why. Can anybody offer some cultural information?
Thanks a lot, Bruce. _________________ Free English Tests |

Hallo everybody, this Post is from Masoomeh, a new member on our Forum. I have posted his comment for him (on his behalf) because, it went, at first, to the wrong box. Bruce.
Hi Bruce, to answer your wonder about which numbers are lucky or unlucky in other countries, I can give you some information about my own country,Iran. In Iran # 7 is believed to be lucky or even more, HOLY. Since the Holy Kuran, which is muslim's holy book, talks about seven skies, creation of the whole universe in 7 days, and in Haj pilgrimage which muslims attend in Meka,Sudi Arabia, one of the actions is cycling round Kaba 7 times, and so many others.
About # 13 ,although it is believed to be unlucky but in a special day which we call the day of nature and is the 13th day of our holiday during Nowrouz(23 of march) all people go to nature and spend happy time with their family in the huge of nature, and it is believed lucky if bachelors tie grass( they while get marry soon). This is some ideas in my country, I hope it does add to your wonder

Hi masoomeh,
Very sorry about the pronoun "him". Glad to know you are a "her" and we are very pleased have you on our Forum. Cultural exchanges are one of the most important factors for understanding and harmony on this planet. Personally, I am very pleased to learn about other countries?customs, habits and ways of thinking etc. It?s getting late again for me so I have to go, but I look forward to speaking to you soon.
Best wishes, Bruce. _________________ Free English Tests |

Hi Bruce, Do you agree that meaning of our names are somehow important psychologically in the believes of people about their luck? To add to your wonder again, let me tell you what does my name mean. It means innocent . All nations have their own nice cultures hidden in the names of their people.
