I would try as you may view in the <...> below:

Matt and Sarah <have been having> (have) some difficulties in their relationship lately, so they <went> (go) to a marriage counselor yesterday. I hope they <will work> (work) everything out soon.

Those are good answers, storm. If the word 'yesterday' were not in the sentence, then you could use present perfect continuous there, too:

Matt and Sarah have been having some difficulties in their relationship lately, so they have been going to a marriage counselor. I hope they work everything out soon.
