Hi suryab

I would suggest you enquire with your educational establishment as to the rules and regulations.

In some countries such as Germany, as long as there is a consistency it should be accepted to write a paper in American English; even if you are doing Anglistics (English studies; language, literaure and culture). However I have known individual teachers/professors mark a student down for wrong usage of English when all they were really doing was using the so called "unaccepted" variation the teacher does not like.

Hi suryab

Although the GRE is an American examination, I doubt very much that writing your essay in "British English" would be a big problem. Make sure you are consistent and don't use slang.

Also spelling mistakes are not taken in consideration when they are grading essays as long as they don't inhibit readers understanding. So i don't think you should worry about British spelling differences like "traveller". Where it might become an issue is using phrases that are not used in American English
