Instead of doing sth

Hiya,
Today I read a sentence ,here it is: He lives in a culture(Hollywood) where violence is constantly in the forefront, where his storyline could seem interesting instead of merely repulsive.
My question is that, as a prep phrase, "Instead of " could be connected with "doing sth" or "nouns",etc. How could "repulsive" come after it here, or it might be printed wrongly? dunno , Thanks.

I think here there is an assumption that 'instead of' would be followed by seeming merely repulsive.

But that sentence seems a little "weird" in grammar......can we say it that way?

Interesting, FF. It is certainly said that way (adjective/adverb instead of adjective/adverb), and commonly-- though we would expect either nouns or rather than. Either it is a very prevalent deviation from the 'rule', or Quirk et al were remiss in failing to include 'instead of' in their list of quasi-coordinators, along with 'rather than', 'as well as', etc.
