Standard English prose evolved from the Chancery (law-court) English of the 14th-c, and has been codified continuously - its grammatical structure in such early works as Lindley Murray's English Grammar (1794), and its lexicon in Dr Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language (1755), which laid the foundations for a long tradition of scholarship into the nature of English usage.
