getting ahead of the story (again)

What does "getting ahead of the story" mean? It seems like it has a different meaning from "telling the subject that is supposed to be told later," but I could't guess it. Could somebody help me? Thank you in advance.

I think you have the right idea. It means that someone is telling a story and jumps to later details before he has told the earlier ones. This can confuse the listener.

Sometimes, when we notice we're doing that, we say, "But I'm getting ahead of myself." When we're confused, we might tell the storyteller, "Wait a minute! You're getting ahead of yourself!"
