Correct answer: (c) approaching

I don't understand why "showing" is wrong answer?
Can I use "expression" in this example?

This is the word needed here because it means interpreting, which is what a director does.

In that sentence, "approach" can be the meaning of "deal with". Yes?
e.g: He at last found the best way of appoaching that problem.
