| So, Americans spent (read waisted) about $60 millions to shoot down a louzy sattelite by a missile? What a waste! Wouldn't it have been more prudent to initially build a system of self-descruction into the sattelite? I bet this system's cost wouldn't have amounted to $60 million (not even near that sum). |

But it would cost much more than $60 million if the satellite's self-destruction system malfunctioned and destroyed it early or never destroyed it at all. There's also a lot of debris in space, including little rocks, and those could hit the satellite in just the right way to detonate the explosives, I would imagine.
Besides, that event was not about destroying that one satellite. It's about testing and refining the ability to target and destroy objects coming in from space, such as Russian or Chinese missiles, or more likely something from Iran or North Korea someday. It could even be a meteor. The satellite was just a practice target. |

Hi Jamie.K,from what you said,i was of some sense impression that you(or americans)'re always hostile to some countries like China...Okay,compare the annual military expenditure between China and US,i'm guessing that you'd assuredly believe that China will not spend $60 million to donate a missile to you,coz probably the R&H party does not have enough $ to do so.

Well, when Chinese leaders, dating all the way back to Mao, have talked about having the nuclear missile technology to wipe Los Angeles off the map -- and with Kim Jong Il making the same kind of statements in the past couple of years -- it tends to make us want to prepare for our defense.
You don't need a big budget to do a lot of destruction, just some technology and a lot of determination.
And with labor so much cheaper in China, you guys can get a lot of bang for your defense buck, so the comparative numbers are irrelevant. |

I don't want to be a spoilsport here but all this reminds me of the idiom 'The pot calling the kettle black'.
Anyhow I don't really mind if NASA wants to practice shooting because according to them, sometime in the future (I forgot when) the earth willl probably collide with an asteroid. I say keep practicing. |
