Usage of little

Could someone please tell me if the sentence below is correct?

'What strikes me as weird is his anxiety over little things'

I used little to mean pettyhere.

I heard the expression 'little people' somewhere.

Yes, I agree. 'Little' can have that sense and suggests 'insignificant'.
