Mentor (noun only) means someone who advises you and very often can mean a guide or adviser you particularly admire.

Monitor (both noun and verb) is an instrument that measures/checks processes or procedures and is used to describe a tv screen linked to security systems. As a verb it means check or measure things like blood pressure/a student's prgress/behaviour.
