"be compared to" vs "be compared with"

Please tell me the difference between "be compared to" and "be compared with".
Is it another matter of British English vs American English?

Hello Nessie,

As a BrE speaker, I use both. For me, if A is compared to B, it suggests:

A → B

while if A is compared with B, it suggests:

A ↔ B

(I expect other members would disagree, however; it probably varies from person to person.)
