Hi Satish,

Thanks a lot for getting back to me. I'm very glad that you want to improve your writing skills together with us. Please tell me more about your current situation so I can help you even more. What do you do? How many emails do you write each day and how many of them are in English? One of the things you can do to improve your writing skills is to try and use phrases you have read somewhere before. Also, try to create short and simple sentences instead of long and complicated ones.

Let me know what you think.
Best regards,
Torsten

Thanks a lot for your e-mail. I didn't expect that surprise and I really appreciated that kindness. I would like to receive more audio stuff, specially with the British accent which I will love to manage someday.

I am from Costa Rica, Central America. A country with a beautiful nature, including volcanoes, virgin islands and plenty of nice people. I work in a private high school in the capital which is called San José: I teach English as a second language. I have about 34 years of experience in this field. I lived in New York city for about 12 years. I haven't been in England, but I wish I could visit it one day. I have been in Germany, France, Italy, Holland.

I would like to hear from you, pretty soon,

Eduardo

Dear Eduardo,

Many thanks for writing to me from Costa Rica. It's interesting that you prefer the British accent over the American one -- after all Costa Rica is pretty close to the United States, isn't it? Please tell me more about your work as an English teacher. Who are your students, what level are they at and what kind of materials do you use? Also, how many teachers work at your school and where are they from?

You say that you have been to a number of European countries. Did you visit them on vacation or did you work there too? What do you think about Germany?

I look forward to your next message.
Best regards,
Torsten

Dear Torsten Daerr,

Firstly, I would like to send my sincere thanks for your mail.

Then, I would like to take this advantage to introduce myself. I am Ms Hoa Luu, coming from Vietnam. I am 24 years old, young and ambitious.

Moreover, I joined this website as I want to improve my English level. As your advice, I tried the grammar test and listening test through your links and I did them well. Nethermore, I register the forum with User name as MsHoa, and I hope to work with you regularly.

Finally, I must frankly say that, my target is to get mark 7.5 Ielts Test this year and I wonder that if you could help me in your way? Or else, I would highly appreciate if you could introduce my someone else or the ways to reach my target?

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
Ms Hoa Luu

Dear Hoa Luu,

Many thanks for your interesting message. It's great to hear you want to score a 7.5 mark on the IELTS and I'm sure you are on the right track. In order to give you more advice on how to improve your English even faster, it would be great if you could tell me what kind of activities you have done so far. For example, how much time do you spend listening to English every day and what do you listen to?

I hope to hear from you soon.
Best regards,
Torsten

Dear Torsten,

Your newsletter is very interesting. However, it contains a sentence which bothers me:

"So, you are already familiar with the personal pronouns?" Shouldn't there be an inversion? ("...are you...")?

Sincerely yours,
Ravindra

Dear Ravindra,

Thanks a lot for your interesting question. You are right, it is possible to say "So, are you already familiar...?" which is indeed an inversion. However, you can also say "so, you are already familiar..." as in the email. If you use this sentence, you are not really asking a question but rather making a comment. In other words, you are pretty sure that the reader is already familiar with the personal pronouns, which you are, aren't you?

Please let me know what you think.
Best regards,
Torsten

Dear Torsten,

Thanks for this email. Please note that I registered with you not as a learner of English, but as a professor of this language who would like to be abreast of all the new trends, exercises, tests and quizzes that you regularly issue.

Currently, I teach ESL to university students majoring in science and humanities courses.

I,therefore, would appreciate receiving teaching materials and tests about writing, speaking, grammar and reading comprehension plus topics for debates in class.

Again, thank you for your concern.

Sincerely,
Salah E. Sabry, Ph.D
