Dear Torsten Daerr

Let me introduce to you; I am Joao Vazquez, from Brazil, living in Sao Paulo state. I'd been studying English for two and half years, and I liked helluva much.

I’ve received your e-mail, recently.

My teacher was from California - USA, and, by the way, let me say a fun thing that I realized about the difference of the accent between UK and USA, hearing youse through the site. For example, words like “either”, “feature”, and others alike ones, sounds differently. Very interesting, isn't it?

Thanks a lot to you, for this opportunity.

I did the homework, about lesson 1, doing the test and listened to Sue Darville, whose voice was very nice.

SYS,
Joao Vazquez

Dear Joao Vazquez,

Thanks a lot for your introduction and your interesting questions. Your English teacher obviously did an excellent job because your English is pretty good and you can express your thoughts clearly. Yes, you are right, there are indeed differences in pronunciation between US and UK accents and this diversity makes English such a rich and beautiful language. For example, the word "either" can be pronounced differently: pronunciation of 'either'

As you can see, there are quite a number of differences between British and American English and the good thing is that in most cases you can understand any person who speaks English no matter what accent or dialect they have.

Joao,

Please tell me more about yourself. What do you do? Where do you work?

I look forward to your next message.

Best regards,
Torsten

Dear Torsten, thank you so much for responding.

I am a teacher of English (as a second language)in Kazakhstan, Almaty. I teach Practical English and English Lexicology. I have been working at the Kazakh University of World languages since 1995.

This year I have to take TOEFL: the administration wants to be sure that the teachers are competent enough and after some TOEFL classes with Native speakers we are checked through test. I teach students, however, taking a test and doing things yourself is hard. (Those who can DO, those who can't TEACH!)

So, I want to practice essay writing and listening. Areas which I dread most! I have very little time, so I am spending every minute doing English!

Hope to hear from you soon,
sincerely yours Zhannat
