The answer is simple-- but difficult. Use them in your speaking and your writing when you can, of course. But you needn't use them to retain them; you must simply encounter them at a reasonable frequency. Many native speakers (myself included) have a much wider passive than active vocabulary. Many words I know I have only read or perhaps heard; I have never written or spoken them myself.

Reading is the key to building and maintaining your vocabulary.
