All in this sentence simply indicates the sense of only as in I was only trying to say. Everything indicates all the things.

Is the word "all" not plural? I don't have to say "all I was trying to say were"?

Hi Ashai,

All can used with both plural as well as singular nouns:
All the people in the world.
All the money in the world.
