One still uses 'one' when one wants to be stilted but when one realises that one is being looked upon as a very formal person, one stops using 'one' and thinks to oneself: Should one continue using 'one' ? One wonders, doesn't one?

Hi Alan,
You are so funny! All I can say is that I know Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II uses or has used "one" and therefore I think we can all use "one", no matter what other people think.

It's all right, EU, there's no need to use a five/six-word phrase every time you want to refer to Queen Lizzie (don't you think it's a bit of a mouthful?) -- I'm sure it isn't a crime of l?se-majest? to abbreviate her name.
PS: For what it's worth, the only thing I don't agree with in your above post is the phrase: 'and therefore'. |

I am afraid I have to do that for the sake of clarity. If I refer to HM The Queen, how do you know which Queen I am referring to? The Queen of Sweden? The Queen of Canada? Queen Victoria?

You can always model your speech on the Sovereign of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Of course, there are many other suitable role models available as well. But The Queen is someone you can always rely on.

Hi Alan,
You might be more English than your Sovereign, but your Sovereign is the one who knows English extremely well. Has Her Majesty ever made grammar mistakes or mispronounced words during her reign?

Hi every body,
I am a new member here and I'd like to be an active in this forum.To be honest, I faced some difficulties to join this forum but I insisted and made it by the end. Any way, the reason that makes me came here even I do not like fourms is that i have weakness in many English skills like speaking and writing but especially writng because my major required to be good in this skill but i am not. I tried before to improve my writing by reading but it did not work with me mabye because the books are not that good. In this semester, my final results were very good except writing which made me sad because i worked hard in it but i could not take A. I alwayes dream that I can write in good way. Forexample, I dream of writing my daily events or any things happend to me but since i started to write i cut the paper into pecies because i could not start or i am not satisfied about my bad writing. Please I need help here, I am ready to have lessons and follow the instructors step by setp and i will be grateful. Thanks |

Starting a career in law enforcement puts a lot of pressure in an individual. The mental and physical strees that you face each day while in the academy, often becomes more than a recruit can handle, and as a result they drop out. The first day is usually the most shocking day because you come in contact with something that you may have never experienced in your life. That day everyone reports to the academy at 0730 hours, dressed in civil attire. The comander of the academy makes a speech, where he invites the new recruits to the long and hard days that they will be facing while in the academy. After that, each recruit has to give a small presentation about who they are, their education and their work related experience. Family members of the recruits are allowed to participate until all the presentation is over. After that they are asked to leave the academy while their loved ones remain under the scrutiny of the academy training personel for the rest of the day. Soon after the family members leave the commander of the academy invites in the classroom the training officers. He presents each one of them by their rank and last name. He than leaves the classroom. This is the time where the training personnel go ape on the new recruits. One of the training officers may be speaking in front of the classroom while the rest of the training officers walks around the classroom shouting and chewing each new recruit. Than after about one hour of shouting and explaining the new rules at the academy, every recruit is issued the gear and uniform. than after a 30 minutes break the grilling continues on the recruit for the rest of the day until 1730 hours. During this time they put so much pressure that some recruits may drop right there and then. It is the worst day anyone could have. I would rather be in war that day then in a such brutal sorrounding.

Oh, no, Her Majesty has never had a chance to make a mistake - every mistake She ever made was automatically crowned a new standard. |

Hi Englishuser,
Are you saying that you encourage people to use phrases that sound awkward only because the Queen seems to be using them too? Also, why should we not care about "what other people think"? If you write a letter to another person using "one" and other outdated language, it actually might be a good idea to care about what the reader of your letter thinks about your writing style.
