What do I have to know in an esl test?

I have to take an esl exam soon and I don't know what I have to know in the test. Please give me some advice or tell me about your experiences, if you have done such a test already.

Which ESL exam or test are you going to take? There are lots of different tests such as the TOEFL, the TOEIC, the Cambridge English Certificates, the LCCI exams or the IELTS test.

My advice: Speak to the person in charge of the test. Explain your situation to them. Tell them that you really want to achieve the best result possible and that you are determined to prepare for the test. Ask them if they can give you more information regarding the exam. Is it a multiple-choice test like the TOEIC? What is the structure of the test? (what sections does it consist of - reading, listening, writing and speaking?). Can you take a look at some sample questions or tasks? How are other test candidates preparing for the test? By asking these questions you show the administrators that you are really determined to achieve the best results and this will make it easier for you to get their support.
