Hi Salvo,

Sorry but I've never heard it before. I have heard «step on the juice» meaning go
faster in a car where «juice» is petrol in American English.

MLB tests prove players in no hurry to get off the juice

JIM LITKE, AP Sports Writer

Bigger is better.
But not necessarily smarter.

What else should we conclude about all those baseball players who were still stubborn, desperate or just plain dumb enough to get caught using steroids even though they knew at least six months in advance that testing was on the way?
On Thursday, Major League Baseball said of 1,438 anonymous tests conducted this season, between 5 and 7 percent were positive. Exactly how many players that translated into is difficult to say, especially after the players' union and management got into a disagreement (what a surprise) over how to interpret the results.

But this much is known: In addition to testing every one on the 40-man roster for each of the game's 30 teams when the season began -- about 1,200 players -- the labor contract signed in September, 2002, gave the commissioner's office the right to test up to 240 players randomly. That means the number of players who got caught could be as low as three dozen or as high as 100.

Either way, it makes what Minnesota outfielder Dustan Mohr said on hearing the news even more interesting: "I'm kind of surprised it's not higher."

Frankly, he's not the only one.

Since there were no penalties and none of the players who tested positive this time around were identified, there was only so much incentive to get off the juice right away.

But let's assume that some players did anyway, if only to try and keep the number of positive tests below the 5 percent threshold mandating that testing with penalties would go into effect next season. Then keep in mind that nearly half of those 40 roster spots were filled by pitchers, who stand to benefit less from steroids....

It talks about steroid in sport. Does it mean - avoid use of something illegal (like steroids by baseball players)?

There's another one but it talks about engines:

Salvo, was there anything in the movie concerning drugs?

2 times in the entire www - that's indeed seems a very rare expression.

Get off the juice again #4 (permalink) Thu Aug 19, 2004 16:42 pm   Get off the juice again

Hi Aranthaa,

Thank you for enlightening us on this juicy issue. Incidentally, I've just spoken on the phone to Raymond Romanos who is from the States and he hadn't heard of that expression either. (I must admit «juice» is almost a homophone and we say that phrase in question over phone it might cause some confusion.

Thanks to the internet #6 (permalink) Fri Aug 20, 2004 8:04 am   Thanks to the internet

So the first article was the one containing the matching expression. That's the benefits of the internet, in addition to entertainment search engines can be valuable tools as well. I've just translated a medical report from German without any paper specialist dictionaries just browsing German and Russian medical sites and finding correct matches...and that's with my German which is much worse than English of any of the learners here. I've found that Internet can be especially invaluable if you're struggling with some purely technical stuff and unable to find a specialist to enlighten you. Not every detail you can get by searching of course and I must admit it can be misleading but with some practice in the majority of cases you can still find a couple of ideas or clues for further research or for 'torturing' experts with more advanced queries.
