Wrong turning

Why we say "wrong turning" and not " wrong turn"?!

I took the wrong ......... at the last road junction, can you tell me how I get back on the motorway?

(b) turner
(c) turned
(d) turning

Hi,

'Turning' is usually used when we refer to junctions of roads as here. 'Turn' has many meanings and is often limited to small movements like turn of a page/ turn of the head.
