Hi angelos, if you are interested in taking the TOEIC you should try and improve your spelling. For example, the word 'u' does not exist in business English (nor does it in general English) and the TOEIC is a business English exam. Also, try to make sure you write grammatically correct sentences. You should only use those structures you have already learned. A lot users want to improve their English and you are confusing them with your sloppy writing style. Best regards Fabrice |

There is nothing better to encourage poor striving students, is there, Fabrice? Or maybe it's one of those tactics to prepare them for the aggressive world of business. There certainly are lots of wolves out there!!
Telling students to use only structures they have already learned amounts to telling them not to learn, since that's precisely what learning is about: speaking and writing while learning, not after (which would be impossible, anyway).
I know I'm not being very diplomatic myself, but I couldn't find a better way to speak my mind. I guess Angelos' thanking you for calling his writing style sloppy topped it all off. |

Hi Conchita, if you encourage your students to use structures they don't know they will get used to using those incorrect sentences. They will develop the habit of speaking they way they want. Native speakers might understand those people and might tolerate those mistakes. After all, the person is trying to speak English as a second language, aren't they? So if angelo gets used to writing 'u' instead of 'you' and 'r' instead of 'are', other learners will pick up this habit too and we'll soon end up communicating in sms mode. The trouble is that it will be very hard if not impossible to switch over to business communication mode or simply standard English mode. How did you learn the word 'you'? You saw it somewhere writting in book or in many books and you heard people say it often. If learners on this forum see the words 'u' and 'r' on a regular basis they will think that this the way they should learn. After all this is what this forum is all about: learning English. |
