In a grammar book from the UK, I saw a sentence more or less like this one: "The litter will be removed from the pitch before the match starts."

I understand this to mean, "The rubbish will be removed from the tar surface before the game starts."

I know I am interpreting this wrong. Can you explain what it means? What sport is involved here?

Hi,

Pitch in this context means field as in football field as used in any team ball game. Cricket is another example.
