my question does not concern the right use of start and begin but the use of the expression "to make sure...". why didn't you use the expression "to be sure"?

Start and begin are very similar in meaning and to find out all the subtle little differences between both verbs you need read a lot of texts and listen to a lot of English audio materials. You can start by reading Alan's essay on start vs. begin.
