English Grammar Error, Intermediate level

ESL/EFL Test #22 "Gerunds and Idioms", question 1

I don't think we'll have any problem with the language here because there's a notice in most shops saying: Man speaks English here.

(a) any
(b) notice
(c) Man

Hi English Learner/Guest

I'm not sure what your question is, but my question would be: What country are the shops located in and who wrote the sign text? Wink

The sentence 'One speaks English here' is grammatically correct and it's wrong with the word 'man'. However, in my opinion this type of sign would be more typical as a passive sentence: 'English is spoken here.'

The word 'one' can be used to talk about people in general, but it sounds very cold and formal and it's best only to use it in very formal written English.

I was only "half serious" when I wrote this question. The reason I wrote my question was that I would not actually expect to see a sentence using the word "one" this way on a sign in an English-speaking country.... or at least not in the U.S.
