Everyday and Every day #1 (permalink) Thu Apr 27, 2006 18:47 pm   Everyday and Every day

Hi! How are you?. Well, If you are learning English, I?m sure you are fine, very happy.

Every day---adverb Everyday----adjective

Why then... "Everyday is like Sunday". Isn?t it

wrong?.

"Oxford Street is full of people every day".
Right?

What about "Every night"? Does it follow the same pattern?. Does it exist "Everynight"?. If so, can you give an example.

For instance, "I don?t mind you going ?till
late every night". Right?

Thanks a million!

Every day vs. everyday #2 (permalink) Thu Apr 27, 2006 19:58 pm   Every day vs. everyday

Hi Jes?s

This is how I see the difference:

'every day' (two words) means 'daily' or 'all of the days'

'everyday' (one word) means 'ordinary' or 'common' or 'routine'

Your sentences: yes, your first sentence is wrong and, yes, your second sentence is correct.

If you used the word 'everynight', then I would expect it to be used similarly to 'everyday'. I would therefore understand it to be an adjective, used to describe something that is routine or common at night. In other words, nothing terribly unusual or special at night because you're describing something that's regular or routine at night. I would consider 'everynight' to be a "created" or "creative" word. (i.e., not a "real" word).

'Every night' simply tells you how many nights --> all of them.
