Furnished = containing furniture. A furnished apartment has the basic pieces: living room sofa, easy chair and table, perhaps; a bed and dresser, a kitchen table and chairs, refrigerator and stove (range). The particular pieces of furniture vary widely, however, and are often 'as found' (i.e. what the previous tenants have left).
